Workshop for Journalists: Tuberculosis Control: Using of Mass Media Resources

On May 24, 2012 Tuberculosis Control: Using of Mass Media Resources Workshop for Journalists was conducted on the basis of the Republic Library for Children and Youth named after K. Bayalinov. The workshop was organized by the Kyrgyz Library and Information Consortium, the Republic Library for Children and Youth named after K. Bayalinov, and Chui Oblast Library within the framework of the project on TB.
The main purpose of the event was informing the public about the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis through Mass Media.
17 journalists from Republican, oblast, and district press, as well as TV and radio, participated in the workshop. Journalists were representatives from the following Mass Media:
- Slovo Kyrgyzstana;
- Chui News (Chuiskie Izvestiia);
- Birinchi Radio;
- Kay News Inform Agency
Roza Sultangazieva, the Project Director, opened the workshop. She told participants about the “Public libraries in TB promotion - a new initiative to reverse the trend of tuberculosis in Kyrgyzstan project. She also outlined the purpose of the workshop: Mass Media should coverage of TB problem as often as possible. If more people know about the symptoms of this disease, its treatment and prevention, they will be less sick. One of the conditions of the stigma that prevents tuberculosis is low level of public knowledge about the disease, and as a result, wrapping it with myths and misconceptions, said Roza Sultangazieva. Journalists are able to inform the public about the prevention of this disease through their publication, thus, they can help people with TB live a normal life. The task of Mass Media is help to reduce the risk of this disease.
The trainer of the workshop was Anwar Akulkerimovich. Beisembayev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, from the National TB Center. His presentation was entitled General Information about Tuberculosis. Anwar Akulkerimovich told journalists about the disease in detail. He told about the transfer of methods of tuberculosis, symptoms and detection of the disease, the newest method of TB diagnosing - sputum test, rapid, high-risk groups, the basic principles of treatment of drug-resistant TB and the duration of the treatment of sensitive and stable disease. Journalists were given statistics on tuberculosis in the past two years and recovered people over the same period.
